Leviathan tracker
Subnautica 2 Void Leviathan (the Shiver Leviathan)
The Void Leviathan is the predator that guards the Void beyond the
Subnautica 2 map border. In-game it is named the Shiver
Leviathan; its file name is VoidLeviathan, which is why both names
point at the same out-of-bounds pack. It does not roam the playable map —
you only meet it if you cross the edge.
Quick answer
A pack of one large female and three fast males, living in the Void past
the map border (confirmed north and east).
It spawns when you cross the warning line, and a hit is effectively an
instant kill. You cannot kill it — but because it
cannot leave the Void, you can scan it safely at the border.
Void Leviathan or Shiver Leviathan?
Same creature, three names. The game labels it the Shiver
Leviathan. Its internal data name is VoidLeviathan,
and players coming from Subnautica 1 — where the Void held the Ghost
Leviathans — kept calling the edge predator the “Void Leviathan.”
Some guides also call it the “boundary”
or “border” leviathan because of where it lives. All four
labels describe the pack below.
What you are actually facing: the pack
The female
Large & armored
A heavily armored female leads the hunt and carries the males on her
back and pectoral wings. She often does not strike directly —
she launches the males at you.
The three males
Fast & vehicle-killers
Smaller and much faster, fired off like projectiles. Their clawed,
scythe-like fins latch onto a Tadpole and tear it apart — the usual
cause of an instant loss.
The trigger
Crossing the line
The pack appears when you cross the border into the Void — not at a set
depth or coordinate. Stay inside the playable map and you never meet it.
Where it appears
The Void Leviathan lives in the open water past the playable edge, so it
has no single map pin. Current Early Access reports put encounters on the
north and east edges of the map, and — unlike the deep
Void in Subnautica 1 — they often happen just a few metres below the
surface, so a fast surface run toward the edge can stumble into it. For
where that edge actually sits and the warning cues, see the
map border page. To gauge how close your route
runs to it, measure the distance from your Lifepod with the
coordinates calculator.
How to survive it — and how to scan it
- Don't fight — retreat. It cannot be killed and a hit
is fatal. Burn boost back inside the border; the pack cannot follow far
into the playable map and loses interest.
- Scan it at the border. Because it cannot leave the
Void, edge up to the orange marker with your Scanner ready and scan it
the instant it reaches its movement limit and turns back. Scanning the
female or any male completes the databank.
- Solo: trigger the Camouflage Biomod
before you cross so it loses track of you, then scan while it disengages.
- Co-op: one player baits the pack out into the Void
while another scans from just inside the line — rotate the bait role so
nobody eats an instant kill.
FAQ
Is the Void Leviathan the same as the Shiver Leviathan?
Yes — they are the same out-of-bounds predator. The in-game name is the Shiver Leviathan, but its data/file name is VoidLeviathan, and Subnautica 1 veterans carried over "Void Leviathan" for the creature that lives in the Void. Whichever you searched for, this is the pack that hunts you past the map border.
Where is the Void Leviathan in Subnautica 2?
It is not inside the playable map — it lives in the Void just past the warning border, with confirmed encounters on the north and east edges, often only a few metres below the surface. It spawns when you cross the edge, not at a fixed coordinate. See the map border page for where the edge sits in EA Hotfix 2 / 23357846.
How do you kill the Void Leviathan?
You do not. Like other Leviathan-class creatures it cannot be killed, and in current Early Access a clean hit is effectively instant death. Survival is about not crossing the border, or retreating fast if you do — the pack cannot follow you far back inside the playable map and will break off.
How do you scan the Void / Shiver Leviathan?
Use the fact that it cannot leave the Void. Equip your Scanner, approach the orange border marker, and scan it the moment it reaches its movement limit and turns back. Solo, trigger the Camouflage Biomod before crossing so it loses you; in co-op, one player baits aggro while another scans from inside the line. Scanning the female or any male completes the databank entry.
How many Void Leviathans are there?
It is a pack, not a single animal: one large armored female leads, carrying three smaller, faster males. The female can launch the males at you like projectiles, and their clawed fins latch onto and tear apart a Tadpole — which is why a single hit ends most runs.
Will the Void Leviathan change during Early Access?
Likely. The Void and the map border are being expanded over the Early Access roadmap, so spawn edges and behavior can shift between patches. This page is last reviewed against EA Hotfix 2 / 23357846 on 2026-05-24 — re-check after a major update.
